When I joined Associated Credit Union 25 years ago, there was a need in the community, but what I see today surpasses anything I could have imagined. The landscape has evolved dramatically, with challenges becoming more complex and widespread. From economic hardships to social disparities, today's world presents a myriad of obstacles for families striving to achieve stability and prosperity. Fortunately, credit unions have stepped in, offering a lifeline to those in need. Through financial assistance, education, and community programs, credit unions empower families to regain stability and build a more secure future.

My dedication to seeing our community thrive is deeply personal. Over the years, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of volunteerism and mentorship. I've seen how sharing my time, expertise, and resources with individuals can reshape misguided thinking and set them on a trajectory towards success. This is why I am a volunteer board member with Next Gen, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing resources and opportunities to first-generation students. As a mentor, I help students navigate their new world, a journey I know well. My involvement with Next Gen allows me to make a tangible difference in the lives of young people who are eager to succeed but lack the necessary guidance and resources.

Established in 2008, the Associated Credit Union Foundation was created to provide an avenue through which members and employees can collaborate and contribute to the financial and emotional well-being of the community. The Foundation is a testament to the credit union ethos, embodying the spirit of cooperation and community service that defines our industry. By partnering with non-profit organizations, the Foundation supports underserved and overlooked children and families, addressing critical needs and fostering positive change. By leveraging the strengths and focused areas of each partner organization, the Foundation is able to deliver comprehensive support that addresses the multifaceted needs of the communities we serve.

One of the Foundation's notable charitable partners is Wilderness Works, a non-profit organization based in the heart of Atlanta. In a city where crime and poverty often overshadow hope, Wilderness Works provides a sanctuary for students through its year-round programs. These initiatives offer a safe space for children to play, interact, and express their emotions in a supportive environment. The organization’s after-school and summer programs, along with outdoor adventures like white water rafting, allow students to challenge themselves, conquer their fears, and experience the thrill of trying something new for the first time.

The impact of Wilderness Works extends beyond mere recreation; it fosters a sense of belonging and self-worth in children who may otherwise feel marginalized. These children often face social and economic challenges that can leave them feeling isolated and undervalued. These experiences are not just beneficial; they are crucial in shaping the character and future of the youth. By navigating the challenges of the wilderness, young people learn perseverance, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. They gain invaluable tools needed to navigate life's challenges successfully, equipping them with the resilience to face adversity with courage and determination.

As more credit unions form their own non-profit foundations, barriers are removed and pathways to success are created for those who need it most. We are pooling resources to amplify the credit union impact in communities, and our collaborative efforts offer essential support to individuals that have nowhere else to turn. However, the work is far from over. The challenges faced by underserved communities continue to grow, and addressing them requires a continued, concerted, and collaborative effort.

Working together, we can accelerate the pace at which help is provided to children and families in our communities. United under the banner of "People Helping People," we can continue to build a future where every individual has the opportunity to live with dignity and hope.
