Senior Fraud Analyst
Compensation: $75,000 - $110,000 based on credentials and experience
Location Type: Remote, candidates must be located in one of several approved remote work states

The Senior Fraud Analyst participates actively in the Credit union’s fraud prevention and risk management activities to mitigate both the credit union and our members exposure to potentially fraudulent activities. Expertise in credit and debit card fraud detection, prevention, and rule writing is required. The ideal candidate will be responsible for analyzing transaction patterns, identifying fraud trends, and developing fraud detection rules within fraud management systems (e.g., Falcon, VRM). This role will collaborate with fraud strategy teams, data scientists, and operational teams and vendors to optimize fraud mitigation while minimizing false positives and member friction.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and refine fraud detection rules for credit and debit card transactions in real-time fraud detection platforms
- Utilize business intelligence to develop new methods for fraud risk reporting
- Develop analytics and make recommendations for enterprise fraud strategies to minimize fraud loss
- Assess fraud trends and provide real-time recommendations to mitigate potential fraud for the credit union and its members
- Perform complex analysis and modeling to identify patterns of fraudulent transactions and create prevention methods
- Create, test, and implement rule criteria in applicable detection systems (FIS, Falcon, Verafin, Alloy etc.)
- Balance fraud prevention recommendations with member experience considerations
- Utilize SQL, Python, Spark, or other data tools to analyze large datasets and extract actionable insights
- Create and deliver BI reporting to provide fraud insight for senior leadership, boards, and examiners
- Develop dashboards and reports to track fraud metrics, KPIs, and rule effectiveness
- Work with machine learning and advanced analytics teams to enhance fraud models
- Perform root cause analysis of fraud cases and identify opportunities for automation and efficiency
- Collaboration with external vendors in rule effectiveness and rule development
- Analyze loss data to recommend and implement appropriate loss prevention strategies
- Evaluate fraud cases and losses holistically to identify areas of improvement
- Maintain knowledge and understanding of current trends, laws, and issues affecting the area of expertise
- Attend educational events to increase professional knowledge
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, computer science, risk management, or a related field (A comparable combination of work experience and training may be substituted for education requirements)
- Strong background in credit and debit card fraud rule writing within fraud detection systems (e.g., Falcon, Visa Risk Manager)
- 5+ years of data analysis experience, preferably with a financial institution
- 5+ years of experience with fraud strategy and rule writing
- 5+ years of Structured Query Language (SQL) and SSRS report writing
- 4+ years of experience with Business Intelligence tools such as PowerBI, Tableau, Qlik
- Experience with R/ Python (Pandas, NumPy, SciPy libraries), VBA, and shell scripting strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of descriptive and predictive statistical tools
- Experience with real-time fraud detection and transaction monitoring platforms
- Understanding of fraud typologies, including account takeover, synthetic fraud, and friendly fraud
- Strong knowledge of payment processing, authorization flows, and fraud mitigation strategies
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills to effectively communicate with team members and external stakeholders
- Excellent presentation skills to communicate complex results to business audiences not familiar with data and analytics
- Ability to prioritize tasks, deal effectively with competing and changing priorities to meet deadlines
- Accurate, detail-oriented, and organized with task management
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret large amounts of data
